Ingredients

  • 1 lb dried split peas
  • 1 ham bone or 2 cups diced ham
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 cups chopped carrots
  • 2 cups chopped celery
  • 8 cups water
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • to taste salt

Instructions 

  1. 1. Rinse the split peas under cold water.
  2. 2. In a large pot, combine all ingredients except salt. Bring to a boil.
  3. 3. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for about 2 hours, stirring occasionally.
  4. 4. Remove the ham bone, chop any meat, and return to the pot. Season with salt to taste.
  5. 5. Serve hot and enjoy!
